Who We Are

Plant Power Initiative Uganda (PPIU) is a women-led non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting plant-based food systems, advocating for animal rights, and improving the health of Ugandan communities.

Since 2023, we’ve been empowering fellow Ugandans to embrace plant-based living as a pathway to healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

What We Do

We go door to door in urban and rural communities across Uganda and work with families to improve access to plant-based foods, support community gardens, and train women and farmers in sustainable agriculture.

We also work in schools, restaurants, and public spaces – because we recognize that dietary change needs to happen at every level.

Plant-based diets reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, lower the environmental impact of food production, and support more humane treatment of animals. This connection between personal health, animal welfare, and food systems is at the centre of everything we do.…

Our Programs

  • Vegan Restaurant Outreach

Each year, we partner with restaurants across Uganda to celebrate plant-based cuisine. We encourage and support restaurants to add plant-based options, run food tastings, and raise public awareness on plant-based menus.  We also participate in the continent-wide Thrive Africa Vegan Restaurant Week,

  • Plant-Based School Meals

We work with schools to introduce plant-based options into daily menus, train school cooks, establish school gardens, and teach students about plant-based food, environment, and animal compassion.

  • Plant-Powered Women Initiative

Women make most household food decisions in Uganda. This program equips them with nutrition knowledge, home gardening skills, and community leadership tools.

  • Street and Farmed Animal Welfare

We advocate for humane treatment of animals across Uganda, including street dogs facing poisoning campaigns and farmed animals subjected to cruel handling and transport. We work with communities, local leaders, and vets to push for better standards.

  • Rural and Urban Farming Support

We train communities in sustainable agriculture, urban farming, and mushroom growing, helping families produce their own food in ways that are environment-friendly, affordable and sustainable.

  • Community Awareness and Advocacy

We build community understanding of plant-based living, sustainable food systems, and animal welfare through workshops, outreach events, and public campaigns.

Our Story

Precious Akampurira, PPIU Founder and Executive Director, grew up as a farmer with a deep love of plant-based food. Over the years, she watched chronic illness and obesity take hold in communities around her – so she began looking for answers.

That's how she discovered veganism – something that addresses three things at once: personal health, food systems, and the protection of animals. In 2023, she founded Plant Power Initiative Uganda to bring that change to Ugandan communities, household to household, on the ground.
